Description
Avodart (dutasteride) is a medication classified as a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body, which helps shrink the prostate gland and improve urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Dutasteride is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate to improve symptoms, reduce the risk of acute urinary retention, and decrease the need for prostate surgery. It is also used in combination with tamsulosin for the management of moderate to severe BPH. Clinical studies have shown that Avodart provides relief from BPH symptoms, reduces the risk of urinary retention, and improves urinary flow rate.
